Area Rugs in Chicago, IL
Area rugs solve problems wall-to-wall flooring cannot. They define seating areas in open-plan rooms, soften echo on hardwood and tile, add color and pattern without committing to it permanently, and protect the floor underneath in high-wear areas. Picking the right size and material for the room is the trick.

We carry area rugs in standard sizes (5x7, 8x10, 9x12) and can source custom sizes from broadloom or remnant flooring when a stock rug doesn't fit. Common picks are wool for living rooms, synthetic for high-traffic family rooms, and indoor-outdoor for porches and patios.
We will help you size the rug correctly to the room (the most common mistake is going too small) and pick a material that fits the use case. Sometimes the best 'area rug' is actually a custom-cut piece from leftover broadloom carpet — same material, exactly the size you need, much less expensive than retail.

Frequently asked
Common questions about area rugs
What size area rug should I get?
+
The most common rule of thumb: in a living room, all sofas and chairs should have at least their front legs on the rug; in a dining room, the rug should extend past chair legs even when chairs are pushed back; in a bedroom, the rug should extend two to three feet beyond the sides and foot of the bed. We help you measure at the in-home consult.
Can you make a custom-size area rug?
+
Yes. We cut and bind custom-size area rugs from broadloom or remnant carpet. This is often the right call when a standard size doesn't fit your room — same look, exact dimensions, usually less expensive than buying a retail rug in an awkward size.
Do I need a rug pad?
+
Yes — almost always. Rug pads prevent slipping (safety), protect the floor underneath, and add comfort underfoot. The right pad depends on the floor below (hardwood, LVP, tile) and the rug type. We pick it for you at the consult.
Will an area rug damage my hardwood?
+
With the right pad, no — pads protect the floor from rug-back fibers and trap any dirt that works its way under the rug. Without a pad, some rug backings can scratch or discolor hardwood over time.
How do I clean an area rug?
+
Vacuum regularly. Spot-clean spills immediately with a clean cloth and water. Most rugs benefit from a professional cleaning every 1-3 years. Wool rugs need wool-safe cleaners; synthetic rugs are more forgiving.
Do you sell rug pads only?
+
Yes. We carry premium and standard rug pads in stock and can size them to your existing rug.
